ABOUT US
Our staff and their commitment to their work as well as their pride in our collective achievements is what has made our practice renown. We have been in Suva, Fiji for over 40 years and a number of our people have been with us over 30 years. At least half of our staff came to us as school leavers and several of our overseas students doing their 6 month practical with us have become famous in their own right. We feel this is an achievement on its own. In 2007 we established an office in Auckland and have had offices in Sydney during 2000-2002 which we may well open it again very shortly. We have affiliated offices in Singapore and Shanghai. We have a very successful client in China with whom we are working on our fourth very large residential project.
So, to our philosophy. We don't want to be stiff or stuffy about this so we just say that our designs are only a product of the interaction of the client. Working in close communication using what we call ‘Workshops’ is our tried and tested management of the concept design. We strongly believe that if the client is made fully cognisant of each design step we take and the rationale behind decisions made, voicing their opinion on aesthetics and practicality of what is after all a subjective matter, an excellent result will eventuate. It is the opposite of the poorly regarded ‘committee decision’ solution.
Our communication skills have been honed by the advent of the Internet, Skype, Websites and Mobile phones. This technology has revolutionised our working attitude and response time. No matter where we are in the world we can see and talk to each other, show drawings and sketch diagrams on skype and instantly get results, debate and make decisions. It is a far cry from the telex days! Our delays now are manmade but being in Fiji and New Zealand we have the march on most countries because we get to work first in the new day!

- Marriott North Ryde Hotel,Sydney,Australia
1985
As the first, and still the tallest, truly multi-storied building in Fiji, the Reserve Bank Building dominates the Suva skyline. Innovative functional design was necessary to ensure the building met the requirements of a national vault, with the incorporation of tsunami floodgates to protect the underground vaults. Uniquely Fijian design details, such as laminating masi panels into formica for fire door finishing, and using “first cut” Fijian plantation pine for the suspended ceilings, ensured the building showcased Fiji’s design aesthetic.

The privately owned site has incredible ocean views, which inspired the clients to construct a Balinese style house on the cliff top. Careful site planning ensured the natural beauty of the site is not compromised.
Staff quarters and garaging are set in the stoney garden pathways and lush tropical ‘disarray’ of verdant planting.
The project was done in association with renown architect Geoffrey Bawa, of Sri Lanka, and was featured on the cover of Architectural Digest.

1993 to present
Our clients, from the west coast of America, purchased 150 acres of beach front land then waited 10 years while their hopes and dreams were defined. Construction commenced with three bures, followed by 2 more bures, the chapel and infrastructure. The magnificent colonial villa that is has a prime location between two beaches followed. A pier to improve deep water access, and more recently the construction of the dorm house completes the built environment.
The Dorm House has been recognised by the Fiji Association of Architects, receiving the Main Award in 2006.

2004
Situated on the fringe of a sparkling aquamarine lagoon, the resort has 42 rooms nestled among the palm trees, and 10 over water bures, the first to be built in Fiji.
Based on traditional Fijian design and construction methods, a quality handcrafted aesthetic respects Fijian culture. Careful site planning has resulted in the construction of a ‘village’ community, which sits lightly in the tropical landscape.

Traditional Fijian construction methodology has been applied to new forms to create a unique architectural style, underpinned with fastidious attention to detail.
The resort differentiates itself by aiming to achieve a high level of self sufficiency.Guests dine on food grown and harvested within the resort, and cooked in first class facilities. The necessary infrastructure was carefully located to merge into the surrounding tropical forest.

Little Polynesia is a boutique resort situated at Titikaveka, an area of outstanding natural beauty proudly referred to as the jewel of the South Pacific.
Polynesian art abounds in and around the 12-bed resort an interpretation of the resort village as a Polynesian art gallery incorporating the ares or traditional house of the region. Tropical design principles were adopted with large eaves, open plan spaces and cross ventilation wherever possible, reflecting a commitment to sustainable design.
The cool ambiance of the built structures blends into the environment to provide visitors with an acclaimed Pacific experience.

Stuart Huggett’s relationship with USP started in 1969 when he was site architect for the transformation of an ex-NZRAF flying boat base into the beginnings of the USP Laucala Bay Campus as we know it today.Since then Architects Pacific have completed a number of significant projects for the USP.
In 2010 Architects Pacific participated in a limited competition for the design and construction of new student accommodation and a new Conference Centre which is anticipated to be the signature building that identifies USP. Architects Pacific are currently on the shortlist of finalists. The competition winner is expected to be announced by mid-2011.

In the mid 1980s the Hanns Seidel Foundation, based in Germany, commissioned Architects Pacific to design a centre for teaching technical and leadership skills, with a focus on community development.
The resulting facility is a collection of timber buildings including workshops, accommodation and administrative offices.
The main design imperative was for the buildings themselves to exemplify the skills being taught at the centre, using local materials and in sympathy with local climatic conditions.
The centre replicates the village lifestyle familiar to many of the students, creating a comfortable learning environment.

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre was an AusAid sponsored project to develop a new centre and temporary shelter for women and children victims and survivors of domestic violence.
The building sits on an awkward sloping trapezoidal urban corner in central Suva.
Large roof over hangs and louvre shading devices help shade the building from the tropical sun.Lilac, the FWCC symbolic colour representing peace and tranquility, was used on the exterior to express the identity of the building.
The safe haven provided by the centre is reinforced by the restricted visitor entry to the first floor, via a long pedestrian bridge.
The facilities accommodate FWCC’s work in public advocacy and community education programmes.
In 2008 the building won the Main Award for the best building as judged by the Fiji Association of Architects.

The South Pacific Commission, now known as the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, was founded in 1947, to, among other things, restore stability to the region after World War II. An original membership of 6 has expanded to a current membership of 26. Architects Pacific won an international competition to become the architects for a new headquarters in Noumea.
Our winning scheme was founded on the imagery of sailing the Pacific. A Micronesian navigational stick chart was used as inspiration during the concept planning. A major reference to the maritime context of the Pacific nations is the form of the conference centre, symbolising an upturned hull of an outrigger canoe.

Architects Pacific won an open competition for the design of the Pacific Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, which was funded by the the Chinese Government. and co- hosted by SPTO (South Pacific Travel Organisation) and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS). Fourteen separate “booths” showed the culture, tourism and trade development opportunities of each represented country.
Our role was to design the exhibit, including graphics and displays to ensure each nation had an individual and recognisable identity.
Construction was completed in coordination with Nomura Corporation of China, which meant all drawings were bi-lingual.

- Huafa Ecological Manor, Zhongshan, China
Our international network of associates has enabled us to work successfully in south China. The Huafa Ecological Manor is an ambitious “gated community” catering to the rapidly expanding Chinese middle class. We worked with Belt Collins, Landscape Architects fromSingapore, to develop the master plan for a new township of 750 residences. Subsequent to the master plan being approved, Architects Pacific have designed a number of different types of dwellings. Our knowledge of tropical architecture and appreciation of cultural preferences has led to our villas being an outstandingly successful commercial development which has sold very well for the client. We have been invited to continue working throughout the staged development. Our earlier villas are now built, and we are currently working on designs for another 23 villas for Stage 3.
The designs amalgamate traditional Chinese themes and modern materials and construction. Extensive attention is given to coordinating architecture and landscape design to create elegant private, living spaces within a park-like environment.

In 1998 Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) commissioned Architects Pacific, in association with Beca Carter International, to carry out conceptual replannning of Nadi and Nausori International Airports. As the airport creates the first impression many travelers have with Fiji, particular emphasis on providing a memorable arrival experience was required.
An updated plan was prepared in 2004, (with Airbiz), which included Savusavu Airport.
In 2010 AFL tendered the project through the International Civil Aviation Organisation. Subsequent to the tender process, AFL entered into direct negotiations with Architects Pacific, who have assembled a team of international consultants for the project. Confirmation of the project has yet to be received as at March 2011.

Traditional Pacific building forms underpin the design of the headquarters of what was known as the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Cooperation (SPEC). Successful environmental design meant mechanical airconditioning was not required. The triple pitch roof with expressed trusses was hailed as the Pacific way in architecture by the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara when the complex was completed in 1975. The original NZ Aid funded complex comprised 14 buildings, 10 of which were residential buildings. There are now a further four office buildings, added as membership has expanded. The NGO is now called the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat. In 1979, SPEC Headquarters, as it was then known, received a nomination for the Pritzker Prize for Architecture.
